A Long Way Gone Post 3

(1) Quote 1: "I especially enjoyed burning this village. We caught everyone here. No one escaped."
By: Rebel
Page: 97
Relates to Question: 1

(2) The significance of this quote is that it shows what happened to many villages and what the rebels who were causing the destruction thought of their actions. This quote shows the mindset that the rebels have and how cruel they are. I can understand how someone would be more than pleased to go to America if people were killing and thinking like the rebels. I find this quote depressing because people being happy about killing innocent civilians is very sad.

(3) I really do not like this "character". I do not even want to call him a character because he has and deserves no part in this story. Even though this rebel is only in a small part of this story, what he says and does are more than enough for me to not like him. This rebel does not sound very smart, and he does not deserve any respect.

(4) Question 1: Why do you think the rebels do all this senseless killing, and enjoy it too?

(1) Quote 2: "We saw bodies of eleven and thirteen-year-old boys in army shorts piled by the river."
By: Ishmael Beah
Page: 100
Relates to Question: 1

(2) I found this quote very disturbing, and saddening. First of all, anybody dying is sad, but especially eleven and thirteen year old boys. It is wrong and sad that little kids are dragged into the war and then are killed by both sides (the Rebels and Soldiers). Even just seeing a tiny bit of death would make me want to leave where I am immediately.

(3) I am surprised Ishmael kept his cool when he saw these bodies. I would have expected him to be shaken more than he was, because these were kids his age. If I were him I think I would have been shaken more, but maybe the sight of dead bodies was such an frequent occurrence in his life that he was used to it.

(4) Question 2: Why do you think Ishmael did not react very strongly to the pile of bodies he saw?

Response 1: This quote is really interesting. I agree with you because the rebels should have no part in the story, but if they weren't in the story there would be no story. ;p

Question 1: I think the rebels kill people and they enjoy it because it probably happened to them once, and they got so mad that they started to take out their anger by killing innocent civilians.

Response 2: I have to agree with you this quote is sad. It's sad because it seems as if the rebels are fighting for no cause. They just kill and kill. They just abduct innocent children into their nonsense.

Question 2: I think because during the time period he was traveling he saw a lot of dead bodies. So when he saw them i guess he got used to it.
