A Long Way Gone Post 1

(1) Quote 1: "The four of us had started a rap and dance group when I was eight."
By: Ishmael Beah
Page: Six
Relates to Question: Three

(2) The significance of this quote is that it shows that the author and his friends had a relatively nice and peaceful life before the civil war in Sierra Leone reached the area where they lived. They had time to do what they wanted, relax and have fun. The quote shows that they were happy with their life before the war, and that they made the best of the time they had.

(3) My personal connection to this quote is that I try to make the best of the fun times I have, and like to do things that involve music and movement/exercise. I think what the author, Ishmael Beah, and I have in common is that we both like music and having a nice time. I don't think I can really connect to what happens in this story because I have never experienced a war or the loss of my family. I think even if I did think of a connection it would be no comparison to the happenings in this story.

(4) Question 1: Do you think this quote accurately describes what the author's life was like back in Sierra Leone? Please explain why.

(1) Quote 2: "I was afraid to fall asleep, but staying awake also brought back painful memories "
By: Ishmael Beah
Page: Nine-teen
Relates to Question: Five

(2) The significance of this quote is that it shows how the events that took place in Sierra Leone have affected and scarred the author. It shows that the "hardships" that Ishmael endured, have made it more difficult for him to sleep and even think. The quote demonstrates to you that Ishmael will have a hard time blocking out his bad memories from the war.

(3) I can connect to this quote because if I was Ishmael, I would have a hard time forgetting the "painful memories" that keep him awake. I feel bad, both because many people died in the fighting he witnessed, and because he has to endure thinking about it, possibly every day.

(4) Question 2: Can you connect to this quote in any way? If you can't think of anything write about something that kept you up, and why.

Comment: I as well think that even though they didn't have money and there was a war going on, they still made time to enjoy life. i definitely agree with you that you make the best times whenever and that you enjoy life to the fullest.i also think that the boys in Africa make fun out of nothing and that they are very up beat
Answer: i don't think that the quote describes what life was like for him, but saying that i do think that some of his life had to do with his friends and his dance group.

quote 1: this is a nice quote it talked about what ishmael had learned about America and why he wants to go to America. It also talk about Ishmael's personality and characteristics.

question 1: yes and no because its mostly talking about America, but it also describes what people in Sierra Leone are interested on.

Quote 2: i like how it talks about some of the hardships Ishmael is experiencing. It also talks about how the war affected his life so much.

Question 2: Yes i can, because when my Dad passed away i remember how painful it was to sleep and to keep awake, because when i was awake i always remembered what my dad would do, and when i went to sleep i would dream about the memories i shared with my dad. - Alan Goco
