(1) Why do you think Yoko wants to help Mr. Naido? How and why does he help her? What do they have in common?I think Yoko wants to help Mr. Naido because both of them seem alike. Yoko helps Mr. Naido with his speech handicap, while he saves papers, pencils and erasers to help her. It seems like Mr. Naido is her best friend because they always hang out with each other after school. I think that what Yoko and Mr. Naido have in common is that they are both outcasts because Mr. Naido is disabled and Yoko is very poor.
(2) Finding out about Ko's "idea" is a turning point for Yoko. Explain how this incident is a turning point for her. What does she realize at that moment? How does her attitude change?
I think Yoko at that moment realized that they are surviving only because Ko is working after class to get money. I think Yoko's attitude changes at that moment because she realizes that when mother died, Ko was just trying to get enough money to feed them.
(3) Question: Do you think you would have used your shoe money to buy food for New Year's Eve? Why or why not?
Answer: I think I would buy food using my shoe money because finding out that Ko was cleaning shoes everyday after school just so we could eat would make me feel so happy that I would do anything just to repay her.
