So Far From the Bamboo Grove Post 1

This is my first review on So Far From the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins. Here are the answers to the questions my teacher has given us.

(1) Describe Yoko's character so far. What kind of person is she?
Yoko's character seems to be nice and caring, but sometimes she does not want to share and help those in need. "Put your blanket over the new mother and her baby,' Mother said. 'No!' I protested." I think this is a good example of Yoko being kind of greedy, and not helping those in need because it shows that she thinks of herself first before of others. I don't think that her being the age of eleven is any excuse for her actions.

(2) Describe the relationship between Yoko and Ko. Yoko calls her "honorable sister," but also describes her as "bossy." Why?
I think Yoko and Ko have a good relationship, but sometimes don't agree on things and get into fights like all brothers and sisters do. Here is a quote that I think is a good example of their sisterly friendship. "Suck on this.' Ko put something in my palm. 'Where did you get caramels?' I whispered in wonder." I think this shows how much they care for each other even though they sometimes bicker.

(3) How does the Kawashima family react to the patients on the train? What does this show you about their character?

The Kawashima family reacts to the people on the train nicely and kindly. "Mother" was always very nice about not eating in front of the other hungry passengers and when they did eat, to share what they had with others. "Mother poured a few drops on a washrag and let some patients suck." This quote shows how much mother cares for the patients. I think Ko and Yoko care for the patients also but do not understand the situation as well.
